Welcome to Jakarta

Your first steps in Jakarta will likely be taken at our beloved Soekarno-Hatta International Airport , named after Indonesia 's first president and vice president. For a smooth entry, make sure you have all of your visa and travel documents ready for inspection.

The currency in Indonesia is the Rupiah (ru-pi-ah) or IDR. Exchange rates are displayed at many banks and money changers. Banks tend to offer a better rate, and can easily be found throughout the city. Credit cards are accepted in most established business outlets.

The Indonesian government has invested a great deal to stay up-to-date in communication technologies. Many telecom providers have cooperated with international mobile phone companies, resulting in great convenience for travelers wishing to make and receive calls during their stay in the country. With three-band GSM mobile phones, you can easily switch to a local network, or have it automatically shifted. Your loved ones can rest easy knowing you will always be in contact.

Prepaid phone cards are also widely available. With a GSM phone, you will be able to make and receive calls in no time once you substitute your SIM card with a local SIM (most SIM cards come complete with a designated phone number and some talk time included).

Getting Around
The most economical and popular way to get around town is by air-conditioned bus.

For more comfort and convenience, taxis are available for hire. The largest and most reliable taxi company in Jakarta is Blue Bird. The company is known for safety in service, and its drivers are famous for their hospitality and in-depth knowledge of the city's streets, even in the most remote areas. Taxis are normally available for hire from hotels and malls. Use caution when hailing a taxi off the street.

Alternatively, visit a car rental counter at the airport to rent a car for personal use throughout your stay.

Give yourself some time to get used to the rhythms of the city's traffic and public transportation system. Jakarta city officials are in the midst of planning new transportation options, including a Monorail serving key stations within the city. Busway programs covering some routes in Jakarta are also in the pipeline - these buses will run in dedicated lanes so as not to impose on traffic flow.
